The Governing Body

What do Governors do?

The Governing Body has general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. We take a largely strategic role in running of the school. This includes:

  • Setting up a strategic framework for the school;
  • Setting its aims and objectives;
  • Setting policies and targets to achieve the objectives;
  • Reviewing progress and reviewing the strategic framework in the light of progress.

The Governing Body acts as a ‘critical friend’ to the Head Teacher and staff by providing constructive advice, support and a sounding board for ideas and help where needed. We may also challenge, ask questions, seek information, improve proposals and so seek to arrive at the best solution. We are responsible for raising standards through the three key roles of:

  • Setting strategic direction;
  • Ensuring accountability; and
  • Monitoring and evaluating school performance.

The Governing Body is also accountable to the local Authority and the role of the Chair is to harness and develop the skills and experience of our Governing body in the most effective way for the good of West Berry Federation.

How do we do this?

The Governors meet twice each term as a full governing body. The minutes of these meetings are available on the Federation website.  Between times, we focus on the details of specifics through Lead Governors.

These are:

  • Health, Safety and Premises
  • School Improvement and curriculum
  • Pay,  Personnel & Wellbeing
  • Finance

In addition, individual governors have a responsibility for particular areas of the curriculum and each age group, and regularly meet with school staff.

Who do the Governors represent?

The Governors are drawn from a range of stakeholders; parents, teachers, support staff, the Local Authority and the wider community.

How can you contact us?

Please contact any of the governors through either School Office at  stating which governor you wish your email to be forwarded to or contact the Chair at

The Governing Body was reconstituted on 3rd December 2013. We fulfil our responsibilities through a “Lead Governor” system. Some decisions may be delegated (through the Scheme of Delegation within individual Terms of Reference) to the role of specific governors; with all other decisions made as recommendations to the Full Governing Board. All work of individual governors (decisions or recommendations) is reported and ratified at Full Governing Board level.
