Writing

At West Berry Federation we follow writing sequences from 'The Write Stuff from Year 3/4 onwards.

'The Write Stuff is based on two guiding principles; teaching sequences that slide between experience days and sentence stacking lessons. With modelling at the heart of them, the sentence stacking lessons are broken into bite-sized chunks and taught under the structural framework of The Writing Rainbow. Teachers prepare children for writing by modelling the ideas, grammar or techniques of writing.'

From Reception through to Year 2, children learn to read and write using the Read, Write Inc scheme of work.  Children are introduced to the 'writing rainbow' through sharing key text. These lenses help children focus on the FANTASTICS (ideas), GRAMMARISTICS (tools) and BOOMTASTICS (techniques).

Children cover a range of fiction and non-fiction topics each year. They work towards a final 'independent write' which is assessed by the teacher.

Handwriting

Handwriting and presentation remain a priority at our federation. Please see our policy below which outlines how we build on the children's handwriting skills.
